What is MicroSort Mexico?
MicroSort® Mexico is a scientifically proven preconception process that dramatically improves the chances that the baby you conceive will be of the gender you desire. This defies the numerous traditional gender selection practices which were unreliable at best.
Semen samples typically comprise of an equal amount of sperm carrying the Y chromosome (which will produce a boy), and sperm carrying the X chromosome (which will produce a girl). The MicroSort® Mexico method separates the sperm cells based on the chromosome they are carrying.
This process results in samples consisting of significantly amplified fractions of sperm that are carrying the desired X or Y chromosome.
MicroSort® sperm samples are intended to be used with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) Mexico, during an IVF, In Vitro Fertilization procedure. Even though the sample is not recommended to be combined with an Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), there have been successful IUI procedures with the sorted samples.
The IUI/ MicroSort® combination will be performed at the discretion of each individual patient and will be dependent on the initial semen analysis which will be requested to verify the validity of the semen sample.
During MicroSort®, the sperm sample is passed through an extensive process to separate the cells with the Y and the cells with the X chromosomes, since this is a long and arduous process, the sorted sample is not able to be used when there is a Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) procedure also being performed.

What are the requirements for family balancing?
- Couples who want to use MicroSort® Mexico to balance the genders of their children must:
- Be negative for HIV 1, 2, Hepatitis B surface antigen and C antibody, and V.D.R.L. Syphilis.
- Provide a detailed Semen Analysis that demonstrates the minimum requirement of sperm concentration, which is equal to or above 30 million. (Ideal amount: 100 million sperm concentration)
- Provide a sperm sample directly to LIV Fertility Center, within the facility.
- Identify the Fertility treatment with which the sample will be combined (IUI or IVF)
What are the requirements for couples at risk for X-linked disorders?
Couples who want to use MicroSort® Mexico to reduce the probability of genetic disease transmission must:
- Be a known carrier of an X-linked or X-limited disorder
- Be negative for HIV 1, 2, Hepatitis B surface antigen and C antibody, and V.D.R.L. Syphilis.
- Provide a detailed Semen Analysis that demonstrates the minimum requirement of sperm concentration, which is equal to or above 30 million. (Ideal amount: 100 million sperm concentration)
- Provide a sperm sample directly to LIV Fertility Center, within the facility.
- Identify the Fertility treatment with which the sample will be combined (IUI or IVF)
The LIV Way — Step by Step
At LIV, we pride ourselves on a flawless system that increases the chances of success. Therefore, we have developed an efficient step by step process from the time you make contact with us to the time you finish.
Below are the steps carried out throughout your stay with us at the LIV fertility center.
STEP 1 | Initial Consultation with Your LIV Advisor
- The initial step of the procedure will be guided by a Journey Coordinator who will explain the procedure, the requirements, and the doctors requested information.
- LIV Fertility Center will be requesting a thorough Semen Analysis to determine if the sample is adequate for the Microsort procedure. If the sample does not reach the minimum requirement, then the Microsort becomes a “proceed at your own risk” process since there may be nothing left to use for your IUI or IVF procedure.
- If there is no sample remaining following the Microsort procedure, we will then request a 2nd sample to be given in order to fertilize the eggs that have been retrieved.

STEP 2 | Consultation with Your LIV Clinical Coordinator
Your LIV clinical coordinator is a dedicated member of our fertility team who will oversee your entire family building journey.
- Once you have become an official LIV Fertility Center patient, you will then be introduced to our Arrivals Coordinators who will begin the scheduling, programming, and completion of the Medical File.
- Each Coordinator has a specific responsibility and will be in charge of providing the needed information and indications so that this Journey can progress without any delays or mistakes. Please be honest with your coordinator and provide the information requested in a timely manner.
- Upon arrival, arrival coordinators will be responsible for the followups, explanations, and scheduling of the medical appointments.
Your clinical coordinator will then schedule all the necessary procedures, which are entirely performed inside the LIV Fertility Center.
The MicroSort® Mexico procedure is a demanding process that requires a high number of motile sperm for sorting. A semen analysis will provide us with significant information to plan for any different measures that we need to consider.
STEP 3 | MicroSort® Mexico Procedure
The gender selection process starts with the washing of the sperm sample. The sperm sample is washed to remove seminal liquid and non-motile cells. After the washing, the sample is stained with a special fluorescent material that attaches to the DNA contained in the sperm.
The stained sperm are analyzed individually by a flow cytometer, where cells pass through a laser to create the stain attached to the DNA fluoresce. The sperm containing the X chromosome will indicate a brighter signature sheen than the sperm containing the Y chromosome.
The flow cytometer employs superior software to identify X and Y chromosome sperm based on their fluorescence signature. The sperms carrying the chromosome that designates the desired gender are separated from the rest of the sample, resulting in an enriched sperm sample — ready for innovative reproduction techniques.
STEP 4 | IVF Cycle
Couples will undergo the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Cycle: ovulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, and embryo transfer, and pregnancy testing.
