Genetic testing at LIV allows us to screen for the most common genetic disorders in identifying intended parents who have an increased chance of having a child with a specific disorder.
What is Genetic Testing?
A genetic test is a blood test that examines DNA — or genetic information. Some types of genetic tests look at the quantity and arrangement of chromosomes, while some tests review the changes in certain areas of the genetic code.
Chromosomes are tiny structures that contain the DNA, which regulates the way the human body grows and functions. Typically, a person holds 46 chromosomes per cell: 22 pairs of somatic chromosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes. The sex chromosomes are the genetic material that determines if it is a boy or a girl. In most cases, women have two X chromosomes, and men have one X and one Y chromosome.

PGS for aneuploidy (chromosome abnormalities)
Down syndrome, trisomy 18, and Turner syndrome are examples of common aneuploidies. Although these are a rare occurrence, they are instinctively common in developing eggs and embryos. We offer testing for common chromosome abnormalities, as well as 24 chromosome microarray — a modern technology with the capability of testing the entire chromosome complement of a cell.
PGS for single gene disorders
Some couples request preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) for a specific genetic condition that may run in their family, such as Tay-Sachs disease, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, sickle cell anemia, or Huntington’s disease. Our center has extensive experience in testing for many single gene disorders, including rare genetic syndromes. Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) can be performed for nearly all single gene disorders. Single gene testing can be combined with aneuploidy screening, to maximize the chances of having a healthy baby.
When is Genetic Screening Recommended?
Genetic screening is recommended under certain conditions, including the following:
- If the female partner is over 35 years of age and has a high risk of conceiving a child with chromosomal problems.
- If the either or both partners in a couple have a family history of chromosomal problems.
- If the female partner has a history of repeated miscarriages or failed IVF cycles because embryos failed to implant on to the uterine wall.
- If the male partner’s sperm is found to have a high risk of chromosomal problems.
