How MicroSort® Works

STEP 1 | Initial Consultation and Semen Analysis
Your journey begins with a consultation with a Journey Coordinator, who will explain the MicroSort® process, requirements, and medical evaluations needed.
Before starting treatment, a detailed semen analysis is required to ensure the sample meets the necessary criteria for MicroSort®. If the first sample does not yield sufficient sperm after sorting, a second sperm sample may be required for fertilization. If the second sperm sample does not meet the minimum threshold, you may still move forward with the MicroSort® procedure at your own risk, but there may not be enough viable sperm to use.
STEP 2 | Consultation with Your LIV Clinical Coordinator
Once you become an official LIV Fertility Center patient, a Clinical Coordinator will oversee the remainder of your treatment journey. Upon arrival at our center, your coordinator will work with you to schedule your procedure. Since MicroSort® requires a high concentration of motile sperm, the semen analysis performed in Step 1 provides critical insights to ensure optimal planning and treatment scheduling.
STEP 3 | MicroSort® Gender Selection Process
The MicroSort® procedure follows a highly specialized sperm-sorting technique that includes:
- Sperm Preparation – The sperm sample is carefully washed to remove seminal fluid and non-motile sperm
- DNA Staining – A temporary fluorescent stain attaches to the DNA inside each sperm cell
- Flow Cytometry Sorting – The sperm passes through a laser-based flow cytometer, which detects the fluorescence signature of X-chromosome (female) sperm and Y-chromosome (male) sperm
- Enriched Sperm Sample – The sorted sperm, now enriched for the selected sex, is ready for use in IUI or IVF
