ATTAIN. Sperm can be collected surgically for use during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) is used when the male partner does not produce sperm in his ejaculate.
The PESA procedure at the LIV Fertility Center can effectively attain sperm from men who have had a vasectomy, congenital absence of the vas deferens (CAVD) or blockage of the outflow ducts from the testes.
PESA — Performing the Procedure
The PESA procedure is performed with local anesthesia. It can be performed in advance of an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) cycle and cryopreserved, or coordinated with their female partner’s egg retrieval. Our reproductive specialist will swab the scrotum with a warm antiseptic. The testes is examined to locate the vas deferens by gently feeling the scrotum. A small needle will be inserted into the vas deferens to aspirate seminal fluid. When fluid is obtained it is passed to fertility lab and examined for motile sperm.
